We caught up with Gavin, Expediting Manager at SMM, to learn more about his role, what drives him, and how the team continues to deliver exceptional service to customers.
Can you tell us about your role at Special Metric Materials?
I’m the Expediting Manager, which means I’m responsible for making sure materials move efficiently through the supply chain and reach our customers exactly when they need them.
What does a typical day in the office look like?
Honestly, it’s extremely busy and fast-paced, and no two days are the same. There’s always something happening, and you have to stay sharp to keep everything on track.
What’s your favourite part of the job? And the most challenging?
My favourite part is seeing our materials delivered on time, exactly where our customers need them. That’s what it’s all about.
The most challenging part is when deliveries are delayed due to courier issues, especially when it’s out of our hands. That can be frustrating because we always aim to deliver the best service possible.
What are you focusing on in your role at the moment?
Right now, my focus is on keeping the workforce happy and motivated, while also improving efficiency. We’re working towards creating a more paperless system and speeding up our processes across the board.
Do you have a favourite product in the warehouse?
I’d say tubing, especially now that we can pull our own tees and create manifolds. It’s great to see how our capabilities are evolving.
What keeps you motivated day to day?
I’ve always been self-motivated. I push myself to be the best at what I do. I tend to focus on my strengths and keep improving.
As for the team, we’ve got a really strong bond. Everyone wants to do well, so motivation comes naturally and we all push each other to be better.
How do you switch off after a busy day?
Spending time with my family is a big one. I also enjoy keeping fit, so a gym session helps me unwind. And I’m definitely looking forward to the summer… BBQs and weekends in the sun are always a great way to relax.
What do you think the future holds for Special Metric Materials?
I see continued growth! More orders, bigger premises, and becoming even more dominant in the industry.
