This is the Special Metric Materials interview with Debra! Our team runs like a well-oiled machine, and efficiency is key! Much of this organisation is down to our very valued Office Administrator, Debra.
Debra knows everything there is to know about our next-day delivery service, high level of customer care, the important day-to-day running of our office and our vast levels of stock of stainless steel, tube, fittings, flanges and valves.

- What role are you currently in at SMM?
I currently work as an administrator at Special Metric Materials
- Can you give us an overview of your career so far?
The base of my experience is customer service, and over the years I have gained a wealth of experience in reception skills, administration and business. I also have gained qualifications and experience with sports and fitness therapies, coaching, sales and counselling skills. Today I like to call myself a ‘generalist’ as my career has covered so much, and I love that!
- What’s your favourite (and least favourite) day-to-day task?
My favourite task is seeing a job go from quote to delivery, this process is very rewarding. My least favourite would have to be filing, as this can be a very lengthy task!
- What made you want to work for SMM?
The excitement around the business is thrilling, as everyone is very passionate and this oozes from everyone involved. Who wouldn’t want to have a piece of that cake?!
- What is your focus at the moment in your role?
We are constantly working on our processes to make sure they run as smoothly as possible, and our main focus is customer satisfaction. The way to make sure this is achieved is to make our processes and systems as easy and consistent as possible.
- What does a typical ‘day in the office’ look like?
I deal with all the office duties, which includes following the order process from order to delivery. I’m also the go-to person for keeping all office supplies up to date and completing health safety and fire checks. I also input all stock orders into our system and make sure all stock and test certificates are inputted accurately and completely. I’m also responsible for the general upkeep of the office which involves lots of filing and archiving and keeping on top of all packaging supplies.
- What do you think the future holds for Special Metric Materials?
Global expansion! This means making our products and service the best in the industry. I believe that our future is definitely bright.
- What is your favourite product in the warehouse?
It would have to be the tubes, because their usage is so variable, and the range we have is very impressive.
- What keeps you motivated at work each day? And how do you motivate the rest of the team?
We already have a very motivated team so not much needs to be done in that aspect; We have regular team meetings where we discuss the business and where it is heading which keeps us all very focused and motivated.
- How do you relax after a hard day’s work in the office?
Spending time with my family is my favourite pastime; we are very active and enjoy heading out for dog walks with our golden lab, going roller skating, skateboarding, BMXing or enjoying bike rides.
