The people working at the Special Metric Materials HQ in Manchester are incredibly important. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to provide the great customer service and expert advice that we are known for.

While Mark Hartley is in charge of the day-to-day operations in the office, our Sales Team is always hard at work supporting him.

One of these team members is Dominic who works tirelessly to forge new client relationships, strengthen existing ones and ensure that every order is processed quickly and efficiently.

Here is a Special Metric Materials interview with Dominic Phillips…

  1. What role are you currently in at Special Metric Materials?

I currently work as a sales executive at Special Metric Materials

  1. Can you give us an overview of your career so far?

I started my working life in the Co-Op as a team member. After a couple of years, I worked my way up to a manager’s role, dealing with the more intricate day-to-day tasks, such as stock, customer feedback and deliveries. Overall, the skills I’ve developed over my short-working life have been hugely helpful in my switch to a sales role at Special Metric Materials, ensuring I can assist our customers with the best service possible!

  1. What’s your favourite (and least favourite) day-to-day task?

My favourite day-to-day task would have to be speaking to our customers and prospective clients; it’s great to know we’re providing a remarkable service and helping to support numerous industries, whether that be food, process or pharmaceutical! My least favourite task must be on the very rare occasion that we get called down to the warehouse to help as I’m not the most confident forklift driver, but as long as it helps our customers then that’s all that matters!

  1. What made you want to work for Special Metric Materials?

It was a fantastic opportunity at a new company, due to their vision and mission statement, I knew it was a perfect fit. We aim to supply the best product with the best service, which is what I’m all about!

  1. What is your focus at the moment in your role?

My focus is garnering new customers, as well as ensuring our current customers receive the best service we can provide. As I’m also new to this industry, I’m placing emphasis on relationship-building so I can understand my customers’ needs further, and improve my technical knowledge.

  1. What does a typical ‘day in the office’ look like?

Firstly, I begin by speaking to customers so I can further understand their requirements (such as when they require materials, whether there are any cost-saving methods, etc). I’d then start quoting the enquiries that come through and make sure my customers receive their quote back as soon as possible; so that they can continue with their own workday. By doing this, we can get the material picked, packed, and deliveries organised in the required timeframes. Throughout the day, I will try to ring out for new business and periodically check in with current customers to ensure they’re happy with our service & materials; seeking improvements and feedback so we can be the best we can be!

  1. What do you think the future holds for SMM?

Personally, I think the future is limitless for us here at Special Metric Materials. We’re making great strides, developing relationships and supporting many people on a day-to-day basis. We have a long way to go, but our first 12-months have been a massive success and I look forward to building on this year’s success with the team.

  1. What is your favourite product in the warehouse?

It has to be the flanges / backers. There are so many different types, with different applications and uses. When I first started, I didn’t understand why they were so different, but over the past 12 months they’ve been a stark reminder of how far my technical knowledge has come along!

  1. What keeps you motivated at work each day? And how do you motivate the rest of the team?

I’m motivated by supporting our customers and making a name for ourselves in this industry. As the ‘new boys on the block’ I take it as a challenge to cement Special Metric Materials’ name amongst the best within the supply chain. I think we all have the same goals, so it’s relatively easy to motivate our team. If one of us is down, we take care of them and put a smile on their face. Working amongst such a supportive & driven team is motivating in itself!

  1. How do you relax after a hard day’s work in the office?

After a day at work, I tend to relax by playing video games with my friends, or watching whichever sport is on that night; I’m a huge football fan so it tends to be football! I’m also really close to my younger brother too, so we spend a lot of time going on adventures and taking trips to the arcade.
