1. What is your role at Special Metric Materials?
I am an Expeditor, which means I am responsible for ensuring that all materials are sourced, prepared, and delivered to our customers efficiently and on schedule. I work closely with the warehouse team, suppliers, and logistics to coordinate deliveries and make sure everything runs smoothly.
2. How are you enjoying your role at SMM?
I find my role extremely enjoyable! I love working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. The team is great, and there’s a real sense of camaraderie and dedication to providing the best possible service to our customers.
3. What’s your favourite (and least favourite) day-to-day task?
My favourite part of the job is taking pick lists to the warehouse team – It keeps me active, as I get my steps in while ensuring everything is organised for dispatch!
On the flip side, my least favourite task is managing situations where materials are delayed. It’s always frustrating when things don’t go as planned, and I have to rearrange schedules or inform customers about potential setbacks. However, problem-solving is part of the job, and I take pride in finding solutions to minimise disruptions.
4. What is your focus at the moment in your role?
Right now, my main focus is ensuring that our customers receive everything they need in a timely manner. This means staying on top of orders, tracking deliveries, and keeping communication clear between departments to ensure a seamless supply chain.
5. What does a typical ‘day in the office’ look like?
A typical day starts with reviewing orders and taking pick lists to the warehouse team. I then work with them to check on deliveries and ensure everything is where it needs to be. Throughout the day, I handle important documentation, such as sending and managing certifications, scanning delivery notes, and checking invoices. I also update courier lists and assist in coordinating materials moving in and out of the warehouse. It’s a busy role, but I thrive on the challenge!
6. What do you think the future holds for Special Metric Materials?
I can see big things ahead for Special Metric Materials. The demand for high-quality stainless steel tubes, fittings, flanges, and valves is growing, and I truly believe we are on the path to major expansion. Who knows — one day, we may even have multiple branches across the globe!
7. What is your favourite product in the warehouse?
It has to be the collars! They are the easiest to count and ensure the correct heat number is assigned, making them one of the most straightforward products to manage.
8. What keeps you motivated at work each day? And how do you motivate the rest of the team?
Customer satisfaction is what drives me the most. Knowing that everything has been delivered on time and correctly gives me a great sense of achievement.
As for motivating the team, I always try to bring a positive attitude to the office. A happy workplace is a productive one, and I like to think that my energy contributes to keeping morale high!
9. How do you relax after a hard day’s work in the office?
After a busy day, I like to unwind by catching up on EastEnders and spending time with my friends. It’s nice to switch off from work and enjoy some downtime.
